I plan on sharing my Internet connection with external clients by wireless radio. How can I share my connection without these external clients being able to access shared files and folders in my internal network? QUESTION POSED ON: 12 JUL 2006
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Mike Rothman Not sure I follow your question. If you mean you are going to connect a wireless access point to your network and allow external parties to use it, one thing you may want to do is connect the access point directly to the firewall and configure it so that all traffic coming in over the access point is only routed to the Internet (not your internal network). You could connect into the internal network using a VPN capability that is built into even the lowest end firewalls nowadays.

You also need to make sure you have adequate security on your file servers and desktops. You should have users and group permissions defined and you should make sure that all of the folders adhere to those rules. Of course, it's not foolproof, but it will make sure that neither Tom, Dick nor Harry will be able to get access to your file server when they connect.
