If I take my IP phone from my New York office to my LA office and plug it in there, how does the phone know what number my phone is? QUESTION POSED ON: 10 MAY 2006
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Russell Shaw Just as when you buy a cellular phone, and sign up with a carrier, your carrier -- or in some cases your value added reseller or systems integrator -- performs a series of commands that "teaches" the semiconductor actually an (ID chip) inside the phone what its "number" is. The number is then verified over the network. When both processes are complete, your IP phone "learns" the number it has been assigned to.
