At what point do I break even installing blade servers over traditional rack-mounted servers? QUESTION POSED ON: 06 MAR 2006
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Carrie Higbie This will vary on the type and, of course, manufacturer of the servers that you use now and plan to use. But a good rule of thumb that I have heard is that you break even replacing four servers. The tricky part here is that you may be adding more functionality to your new servers that you didn't have on the older servers, so when you calculate your break even point make sure that you are comparing apples to apples and then add the increased functionality (hardware/software, etc.) as a separate line item. Make sure you count day two costs like power and operating costs, and also include the savings you will realize on management, etc.
