Can a folder (e.g., My Documents) be password-protected? How easily can a third party encrypt the data from a protected folder system? I'm not very experienced yet in computer use. QUESTION POSED ON: 14 OCT 2005
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Bob Konigsberg If you use a compressed folder (created by WinZip), then you can password protect the zip file such that any files removed or extracted from it are password protected. Unfortunately, there are two drawbacks:
  1. You have to buy WinZip
  2. It doesn't work for applying passwords to new files added, at least for a person who isn't good with computers.
What I'd recommend instead is that you use a revision control system where the individual has permissions to check files in and out, and this can be subject to further controls. It works in a manner similar to checking books in and out of a library, with the additional function that for each document checked back in, it keeps track of who modified the document and what changes were made. That way, it can reproduce any version of a document at any point in its lifetime within the control system.
