For a WebSphere Portal 5.1 installation, are there any caveats to using RAD 6 and WAS 6 versus WSAD 5 and WAS 5? QUESTION POSED ON: 05 AUG 2005
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Tony Higham For a WebSphere Portal 5.1 installation you can use either WSAD 5 or RAD 6 to develop portlets. Of course RAD 6 has all the latest and greatest bells and whistles for portlet development, which allows you to maximize the capabilities in WebSphere Portal 5.1. I know that WSAD supports development of portlets that use the IBM API and the JSR-168 API (IBM's strategic direction). However, I believe that RAD 6 has superior support for development of Struts and JSF portlets, both of which are supported in WebSphere Portal 5.1. While JSF is relatively new (and, therefore, in my humble opinion,s needs to be proven), Struts portlets are an invaluable tool for creating wizard-like portlets.
