We have a problem with blank e-mails. Occasionally an e-mail will arrive in a mailbox blank, but if it is forwarded, the e-mail appears. This only happens from e-mails sent from another server, some internal, some external. If an e-mail is sent to two people, one person can get the email normally, but to the other it appears blank. Do you have any ideas why this is happening or how I can fix it? QUESTION POSED ON: 14 JUN 2005
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Mathew Newman Check the person document in the Domino directory, the location document in the Notes client and the "Internet Mail format" option in the user's Notes preferences.

In the person document in the directory you are looking for: "Format preference for incoming mail."

In the location document you are looking for: "Format for messages addressed to internet addresses:"

In the client preferences, look for the following:

  1. File --> Preferences --> User Preferences
  2. Mail Heading
  3. Internet Heading
  4. "Internet Mail Format"
And finally, check the "Type of mail system the person uses" in the primary mail field in the recipient document in the user's personal address book.

Quite simply, the issue you are referring to has everything to do with the server and client trying to re-encode an encoded e-mail (and, no, I'm not referring to Maxwell Smart here).

In my experience, the following settings will ensure the "cleanest" mail transfer and receipt to avoid the issue you are describing.

  • Person Document, Domino Directory: "Keep in senders format"
  • Location Document, Notes Client: "MIME Format"
  • Client Preferences: "HTML Only"
  • Personal Address Book: "Lotus Notes" (the default)
