Have a client who is telnetting to a 170 box (V4R3M0) over the Internet. They are having disconnect problems at random times and different locations. From my office, I have no problems -- it stays up forever. From other locations, it could disconnect after five minutes or two hours. I talked with the ISP, which is the same one I use, and they aren't disconnecting the client.

My client is transferring to a s/36 machine and going to a pre-defined workstation ID. I have another client doing the same thing on the same box without the remote part, where all sessions are internal to their office, and they have no problems. The PTF levels on both machines are the same. QUESTION POSED ON: 02 JUN 2005
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Shahar Mor Sometimes there is an inactivity timer somewhere on the network. Lower the TCP keep-alive. The keep-alive frame may reset the inactivity timer. Some network components appear to ignore keep-alives.

The iSeries TCP keep-alive is set using the CFGTCP command, Option 3. The value must be less than half the value of the idle timer. For example, if the firewall idle timer is 60 minutes, the keep-alive should be set to 29 minutes or less.
