As more and more IT professionals get unemployed and have to work from home with a small budget, how can we benefit from Voice over IP and what are the prereqs for such an implementation? Does anybody sell these services to the normal household?

There are several companies like Vonage that sell VoIP services. In fact, your local phone company may be doing just that and you don't realize it. That is how they are charging flat rates for long distance and local traffic. It is estimated that 35% of all calls you make are carried in VoIP packets. Some cable companies are even getting into the business. I would suggest doing an internet search on VoIP residential -- there is a multitude of services.
