In your article (Golden's Rules: Data warehousing at 75% off with open source, part 2), you mention alternatives to proprietary data warehousing products like SAS. You didn't mention an open source alternative called R. We're thinking about using R as an SAS replacement. I've read that R has a very powerful graphics engine that produces stunning data visualization, a feature for which SAS has always been behind the curve. Would R be a good bet? Are there any things about R that could cause problems?

QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Bernard Golden
I must confess that I am not familiar with R. In the article, Sabre was using SAS only for the analysis and display of information, not for the storage. In that way, it looks like R would be a good alternative. I don't think I should make any particular recommendations about R's suitability because of my unfamiliarity with it. However, one of the great things about open source is the community. You can easily ping the user forums to see what people are using the product for and so on. Undoubtedly someone there has evaluated R against SAS and can give you some feedback.
