I just read that Solaris 10 is going to be offered for free, and that Sun is only charging for support. Given that information, would my enterprise be better off using Solaris 10 rather than one of the major Linux distros? What would be pros and cons of Solaris 10?
QUESTION POSED ON: 16 NOV 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Bernard Golden
Solaris is a very well-established operating system, so obviously there are lots of applications, service providers and support options available. Linux, though quite well established, has fewer applications. On the other hand, it is very early in the game to see how things will turn out with the open sourcing of Solaris. One of the keys to a successful open source product is a vibrant user community, which Solaris is just beginning the effort to build. If you already are a Solaris shop, continuing down that path is a no-brainer. However, if you are just starting and your choice is between Solaris and Linux, I suggest you consider Linux very strongly.
