What in your opinion is the case for using a meta-layer? Surely, if the information consumers are just concerned with digesting information on a report, for instance, it doesn't make any difference (to the end user) how that information is constructed? QUESTION POSED ON: 21 OCT 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Ian Abramson I differ with your opinion here. The meta-layer or universe or catalog is provided to users to simplify their access to the warehouse. First it provides us with the ability to ensure that people understand the data by making the definitions understandable and consistent. It also allows people with an intimate knowledge of the database and its optimal join methods, which provides everyone with the best chance to write and execute fast queries. So I guess I would say I like the meta-layer.
