In a new enterprise-wide data warehouse (EDW), should we plan for a robust data retention strategy beginning at the conjunction with the plan for the EDW? Or should the EDW be allowed to mature before finalizing the long-term data retention? QUESTION POSED ON: 18 OCT 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Ian Abramson Building a data retention strategy from the beginning of a data warehouse project is always a good idea. This strategy will contribute to how a table or tables will be deployed. So I would say that you would start it at the beginning. However, it also will depend on business needs, which are often changing, so I would say that you would only finalize the strategy after the warehouse has matured. So you basically need to consider archiving during all maturity levels, as they will tend to evolve over time.
