I have done my MCS recently, and I want to apply for a job as a junior network engineer, but I have no experience with it. Please tell me how I can get up to speed on this job in a month and which books I can read or which courses I can take to get this type of job. QUESTION POSED ON: 11 OCT 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Ed Tittel Unless you have or build a network and spend every waking hour studying it or using it, a single month may not be enough time for you to garner the kind of knowledge, skills and experience you'll need to translate your degree into a job. That said, I'd urge you to try a two-pronged strategy:
  1. Start looking for a job immediately, and be completely honest about your background, knowledge, skills and experience -- but also, your plans to remedy any perceived lack in any and all ways available to you. Be prepared to update your cover letter, resume and CV on a weekly basis as you progress with item 2 below.

  2. Build a learning network by begging, borrowing or stealing what equipment and software you can, or find some way to work on a network (without pay, if necessary) to get time and experience with and exposure to the kinds of networks you'd like to work on for a living.
If strategy 1 doesn't work, ongoing effort on strategy 2 should make you an increasingly more attractive job candidate as you gain more hands-on knowledge, skills and experience.

Good luck!
