I work in the IT industry as a sales engineer. I am considering pursuing a master's degree to ultimately teach on the college level. Knowing that I'll need a PhD, would it be more beneficial to get it in network security or electrical engineering. I want to be able to pursue an electrical engineering PhD after my masters. QUESTION POSED ON: 07 OCT 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Ed Tittel Little known fact: Once you earn a PhD, you can use it to teach in any department you want, as long as you can convince those in a hiring position to give you the job. Thus, if you want to teach in EE, it would stand to reason that you'd get a PhD in that subject, but that doesn't have to be the case -- it's just easier that way. Also, there's no reason why you can't get an InfoSec MA/MS and then go on to a PhD in EE -- it'll just take longer and cost more money.

HTH, and thanks for posting,
