I am interested in getting a software development position that will allow me to use my Java skills. However, I only have academic experience with using the language. Will a certification in Java programming or Java development give me enough leverage to get employers to notice my resume? QUESTION POSED ON: 07 OCT 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Ed Tittel How does a big fat "maybe" strike you as an answer? Let me therefore suggest that, since you obviously believe you do possess some Java programming skills, that you also write a cover letter that explains why you believe this to be true and what kinds of things you've done or built that have led you to believe so. If all you have is academic experience, your odds of talking your way into a job go up the better you document that experience and explain in as much detail as you can how that academic experience nonetheless relates to the job for which you're applying.

HTH and good luck!
