I usually configure my SMTP to use a different port, and have been successful until recently when I opened up message relaying.

It seems like someone did some major spamming of my mail server last night. I have so far closed off all SMTP traffic, but my POP3 is still not receiving any messages. Are the messages lost or are they stored in cyberspace and will eventually be received by my e-mail server?

Does you have any recommendations for good e-mail programs that I could use? I would prefer one that would allow clients to check to their e-mails online. Thanks! QUESTION POSED ON: 15 SEP 2004
QUESTION ANSWERED BY: Andrew Pollack What mail server? Is this sendmail or qmail in linux? Don't open up relaying -- even on a different port. People scan ports to see what answers, and an SMTP server is easy to spot.

So, you've blocked SMTP (port 25) and now nothing can get in. Not even mail sent to your server. Your POP3 client won't find anything, because no Internet servers can send to your SMTP listener.

If your machine is registered to receive mail for a domain, presumably you have an MX record in your DNS that points to it. That machine needs to listen on port 25, or no other servers will find you. You need to block relaying, or you're a spam server and anyone (like me) who uses a blacklist for known relay sites will not accept mail from you.

This all makes the assumption that you're running a small Linux server with sendmail and attempting to communicate with people with it. If that's not correct (and your question doesn't give me a lot to go on), then of course you'll need to get back to me.
